For those of you who haven’t been to the Sydney Flemington Markets, it’s really worth the trip. If you go on a Saturday you can start your visit in the flower markets where you will find an incredible variety of fresh flowers in all shapes and colours. You may even have the pleasure of listening to one stallholder in particular singing his favourite opera tunes. All the fresh flower shops in Sydney come in nice and early to grab their fresh stock for the day so you also have to get in early to grab some great bargains. Once leaving the flower markets you stroll towards the main building which houses the fruits and vegetable markets. Stall after stall after stall offering fresh and exotic fruits, vegetables, spices, fish, eggs, meat, nuts, and all sorts of brick a brack. The markets can be extremely busy and it’s easy to get swept away with the crowds.
I love the hustle and bustle, the noise and chaos of these markets. Everything is so cheap, it’s hard not to end up buying way more than you planned until you just can’t carry any more. I took so many photos this day that I can’t use all of them on this page. I’ll be sharing them with you on the site as we go along.
The fruit and vegetable varieties are endless with stalls specialising in certain types of vegetables, fruits and herbs. There is a huge range of common vegetables and fruits like these fresh lettuce varieties, beetroot and Italian roma tomatoes above.
There is always a huge number of stalls selling freshly picked Asian herbs, vegetables and fruits. Fresh herbs such as mint and coriander and young ginger can be used in all sorts of Asian dishes along with Asian vegetables such as the snake beans, oyster mushrooms and daikon radish below.
These ingredients below are enjoyed by specific cultures around the world. Plantains are green bananas that need to be cooked before eating. Banana blossom is the flower of the banana plant and is sliced finely and cooked into all types of dishes including Indian curries, one of the most delicious curries I’ve ever tasted. Green Pawpaw’s are used in Thai salads, pickles and curries.
A trip to the markets can also be an opportunity to cook and try ingredients you’ve never eaten before. Different types of Eggplants are some of my favourite ingredients to use in cooking, they can be added to curries, stir fries, pan fried or added to stews to give body and flavour. There are a huge number of different types of eggplants grown all over the world. These were three mini eggplants that I found.
I always try to find as many new and exotic fruits and vegetables as possible when I visit the markets. I’d never seen fresh pistachio’s before (below on the left). Dragon fruit (top right) tastes incredible with white flesh and black spots when cut open. Fresh coconuts (bottom right) are a real treat not only for the delicious milk but for the sweet creamy flesh you can scoop out once you’ve cracked the outer shell (usually with a hammer so watch your fingers).
Paddies Markets at Flemington is open everyday but welcomes the general public on Friday, Saturday and Sunday’s. The flowers, fruits and vegetables are mainly on Friday’s and Saturdays. You can also do tours through the markets if you wish. See the website links below for more information.
When I visit these markets, it’s impossible not to be swept up in the hustle, bustle and excitement that every visitor feels when looking at the range of delicious and fresh produce we have available to us. If your in a slump with your low carb diet and you need some inspiration, organise a trip with the family to your local markets and expand your cooking repertoire. Either look up a new recipe that you’ve never tried before you head off and purchase what you need during the trip, or use the visit to your local market to discover fresh, new and exciting ingredients that take you out of your usual comfort zone.
